Katherine Sanguinetti, a spokesperson with the Colorado Department of Corrections says 51-year-old Kevin Lust, a murderer convicted in Oregon, killed 50-year-old Ronald Ferguson in a prison cell house around 5:40 p.m. Wednesday. Ferguson was serving 25 years at the Colorado Territorial Correctional Facility in Canon City for sex assault on a child in Arapahoe County. No other inmates or correctional officers were injured in the incident.

Sanguinetti says Lust, who was serving life in prison with no parole, has been moved to the Colorado State Penitentiary, the state's maximum security prison. The Inspector General of the Colorado Department of Corrections is overseeing the homicide investigation. Once the investigation is finished, the case will be turned over to the Fremont County district attorney, who will decide whether to file further charges against Lust.

Following the homicide, the prison was placed on lockdown and visitations were cancelled. With the prison's return to normal operation, Sanguinetti says visitations will resume this weekend. Only volunteer programs, such as church services will be cancelled.

Sanguinetti says the last murder in a Colorado prison was in 2004.
