Thousands line up as sheriff's office helps with Thanksgiving

ADAMS COUNTY - Thousands of people lined up at Rocky's Auto on Saturday to get a voucher toward their Thanksgiving dinner.

The Adams County Sheriff's Office held the 6th Annual Operation Free Bird, featuring free food, live music and an autograph session. 9NEWS Entertainment Reporter Kirk Montgomery was there.

The sheriff's office gave out 4,200 $10 vouchers people could use for their big holiday feast.

"We're supposed to be doing more than just law enforcement," Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr said.

He says by building trust in the community, it helps them do their jobs.

The goal was to feed 5,300 families this Thanksgiving. Darr says it's part of their "pro-active approach" to law enforcement.

Vendors like the Denver Pizza Company and Haney's Coffee Shop were handing out free slices of pizza and free hot cocoa. Other companies gave away bags of tortilla chips, stuffed animals and other toys and food.

The band Nightwolf was on hand to play tunes and Miss Adams County Fair was among those signing autographs.

The event is still going until 4 p.m. at Rocky's Autos, located at the intersection of 64th Avenue and Federal Boulevard in Westminster.
