AURORA - Joshua Maestas is a 10-year-old boy from Aurora who loves baseball so much that he chose to have his left leg amputated a few years ago, because it was the only way he could continue playing the game he loves.

Maestas was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer at the age of 6, and became one of the first children in the U.S. to undergo a surgery called Van Ness Rotationplasty, which involves the removal of the tumor plus the joint.

After removing Josh's knee bone, doctors took the distal limb (the part of the leg farthest away from the body's center) and attached it to the proximal limb (the part of the limb closest to the body's center) with the foot facing backward.

This allows him to control the movement of the prosthesis better.

Maestas is having a great season for the Cherry Creek Little League Yankees and is one of the best players in his division.
