DENVER - Disadvantaged Denver and Jefferson County residents desperate to beat the heat may be able to get assistance from a special state-sponsored program. ![]() Sun Power Inc. is a non-profit organization that administers grants for free swamp coolers through Energy Outreach Colorado. Currently, 100 new evaporative swamp coolers are available for eligible residents. According to Doug Dolan, HVAC Supervisor for Sun Power, the program began four years ago as a pilot project for frail, elderly or disabled Denver County residents who were at risk during heat waves because they did not have air conditioning. The program has expanded to include Jefferson County and Dolan says things have been very busy with the current heat wave. Anyone currently enrolled in the state's LEAP (Low Income Energy Assistance Program) is eligible to receive the swamp cooler. Low income residents who meet certain qualifications can also get a free cooler while supplies last. For instance, a two-person household with a maximum gross monthly income of $2,158 or less would meet the eligibility requirement. For more information about the program or about eligibility please call Sun Power at 303-382-1514. (Copyright KUSA*TV, All Rights Reserved)
