BALTIMORE, Md. - A new study reveals mp3 players may pose a safety risk for pedestrians.
Researchers at the University of Maryland found the number of injuries and deaths involving pedestrians wearing headphones have tripled over the past seven years.
Over half of the incidents involved trains, and in one third of the cases, a warning sounded before the crash.
Most of the victims were male and under 30 years old.
Researchers say besides masking noise, wearing headphones may distract pedestrians from being aware of their surroundings.
