DENVER - Her daughter told her she adopted him, but when a Denver mom saw a 6-month-old Shar Pei's picture on TV with the headline "stolen," she knew exactly what she would do.

Volunteers at the Maxfund Shelter tell 9NEWS the mother returned the puppy on Sunday morning and apologized for her daughter's behavior.

"She did the right thing. She did not know anything about this, I feel for her," Maxfund Staff Member Chelsea Manschot said about the mom.

The shelter says it does not plan to press charges because volunteers just wanted the puppy returned.

The return of the Nick, the Shar Pei, came just one day after 9NEWS aired surveillance video of the two people who posed as volunteers to steal the dog.

"Thank you so much for your help and efforts to get him home safe," Manschot said in an email to 9NEWS and the community.

The shelter says because of this incident it plans to take a look at its volunteer policies and procedures and make changes.
