The victim was with family members at the Cimarrona Campground. The Colorado Department of Health and the National Forest Service are posting warning signs in the area.
Humans can get plague from rodents, including squirrels, rats or chipmunks.
The health department is not identifying the victim. The Centers for Disease Control says there is an average of seven human cases of plague nationwide every year.
