Monday, Broomfield police arrested 28-year-old Samuel Maldonado-Tapia, of Broomfield.
Police say Maldonado-Tapia set a pile of clothing on fire at the Broomfield Walmart on West 121st Avenue. Police say he used an accelerant he got from inside the store to set the fire.
Walmart shoppers scrambled for safety as smoke filled the aisles Monday. The fire was put out before crews arrived.
Tapia allegedly held a knife to the throat of a six-year-old boy who was sitting in a shopping cart when police arrived.
Tapia was taken into custody after a short scuffle with police.
Maldonado-Tapia is being held at the Broomfield Detention Center on charges of first degree kidnapping, attempted second degree kidnapping, menacing and first degree arson.
