Lakewood Police Public Information Officer Steve Hipwell says at 12:30 a.m. two Lakewood Officers were conducting a traffic stop on a possible stolen vehicle near Pierce Street and West Colfax Avenue.

Hipwell says the passenger of the vehicle, identified as 48-year-old Bernard John Trujillo, became combative with the officer standing on the passenger side of the vehicle. During the confrontation the officer used a stun gun on Trujillo.

Following the incident, the driver took off. The other officer standing on the driver's side of the vehicle had his arm pinned in the vehicle as it drove away. The officer and was briefly dragged before shooting the driver.

Both the driver and the passenger were taken to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood. The driver died a short time later.

The officer sustained minor injuries.

The name of the 40-year-old driver was not released.

Trujillo was taken into custody and expected to make his first court appearance Friday.
