Royal Caribbean is adding the top-selling doll from Mattel to the line-up of kid-friendly characters on its ships with new Barbie-themed movie nights, story times and other activities at its children's program.
The line also is rolling out a $349-a-person "Barbie Premium Experience" that will let girls sleep in Barbie-themed cabins, attend a Barbie tea party and design Barbie outfits. The experience also includes a dance class and fashion show, and participants will be able to take home a cruise-themed Barbie doll and outfits, a Barbie-themed blanket and pillowcase and other Barbie items that will adorn their rooms.
The new partnership with toy maker Mattel, to be announced today, will kick off in January on select Royal Caribbean ships and be fleetwide by March, an executive tells USA TODAY. Royal Caribbean vice president Vicki Freed, a Barbie collector, says the new offerings are aimed at children ages 4 to 11, but the line expects adult fans of Barbie to take an interest, too.
Passengers will be able to book the Barbie Premium Experience through travel agents starting in October.
