New national strategy for preventing suicide

More than eight million adults report having serious thoughts of suicide in the past year and 2.5 million people report making a suicide attempt in the past year. Also, nearly 16 percent of students grades 9 through 12 report having seriously considered suicide. 7.8 percent report having attempted suicide once or more in the past 12 months.

Suicide can affect anyone, however, middle aged men, older men, members of the Armed Forces and veterans are among populations known to have an increased risk in suicidal behaviors.

We spoke with U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin about this issue and a new National Strategy for Suicide Prevention.
