The Beckers are promoting free prostate cancer screenings the week of Sept. 17-21.
The Beckers, married for 32-years, are pushing men to get about prostate cancer screenings, through a simple blood test, called a Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test.
Next week, there are multiple locations across Colorado providing the free screenings.
Craig has battled prostate cancer for eight years. His wife, Suzanne, has hopes to keep him alive for many years to come.
"My priority is to keep Craig alive as long as possible," she said, "Having the best life he can and to give men hope."
Becker says the latest research and drugs, along with a positive mental attitude, have kept him alive now the cancer has metastasized.
He believes early detection is the key to saving the lives of men.
"It can't get much better than free screenings," Craig said. "Find out what your PSA is because [prostate cancer] can kill you."
In addition to their advocacy role, the Beckers lead a group called The new Denver Men's Club, a support group men and women from around the country have found online.
"When it comes to prostate cancer, nobody seems to want to talk about it," said Jody Cook, a Wisconsin resident whose husband Craig passed away in 2011.
Craig Cook battled prostate cancer for 11 years, and found the new Denver Men's Club by searching for advice about prostate cancer online.
"He needed that. I think he survived longer because of that," Jody Cook said. "He was a fighter and a very proud man."
Cook reiterated the need for men 40 years and older to get tested.
Nearly 218,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year and approximately 32,000 men die from it.
It's the second leading cause of death among men in the United States, behind lung cancer.
September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
There are multiple activities to promote the importance of screenings including the University of Colorado Hospital's annual Behind the Curtain event next Thursday. September 20th, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. in the Seawell Grand Ballroom at the Denver Center for Performing Arts.
