The Daily Camera reports RTD will distribute passes with an implanted microchip that will allow riders with an EcoPass to swipe when boarding. The cards will be sent to employers and universities in October and will take effect in the new year.

The EcoPass program allows riders to use RTD's buses and trains on an unlimited basis for a year. Riders get a pass through their employer or, in the case of the University of Colorado, as part of their student fees.

RTD incorporates all or parts of Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas and Jefferson counties.
