But, legislation isn't the only thing that can make driving safer for everyone. New technology is being developed at MIT's AgeLab to help older drivers feel safer and more confident on the road.
Joseph Coughlin, the director of the MIT AgeLab, says one of these technologies is smart headlights, which help to increase a driver's confidence in getting behind the wheel at night.
"Smart headlights are able to adjust to oncoming traffic and adjust to road conditions to make driving a little bit easier - to increase that confidence and capability to go out at night," Coughlin said.
Coughlin also mentions emergency-response systems, reverse-monitoring systems, blind-spot warnings and lane-departure warnings as some of the other technologies making roads safer.
"These are the things that compensate for part of that natural aging process," Coughlin said. "Older drivers seem to really take to new technologies that present real value to increase their capabilities."
