Fayette County receives about $750,000 a year in coal severance taxes.
Commissioner Matt Wender says he's still calculating how much the county will lose from Tuesday's shutdown of the Alloy deep and surface mines.
Virginia-based Alpha announced Tuesday that it was closing eight mines and is eliminating 1,200 jobs by early 2013.
Four of the mines are in West Virginia, three in Virginia, and one in Pennsylvania.
Alpha says about 270 of the 400 workers affected by the closings will either be reassigned or hired to replace outside contractors. But in West Virginia, 80 miners are out of luck.
In Virginia, 70 are now scrambling for jobs. In Pennsylvania, three are unemployed.
