New Zealand police have confirmed Kenneth Stithem, and Kirsten Steinke, married less than a week ago, were pulling out from Waitomo Caves Road on to State Highway 3 when a cement truck T-boned the driver's side of their vehicle, said Matt Sillars, inspector for the New Zealand police.
The crash occurred Thursday morning, New Zealand time, Wednesday afternoon U.S. time, officials said.
Stithem died at the scene, police said.
Steinke was flown to Waikato Hospital and remains in critical condition, according to her nurse, Venus Paraiso.
