"They're killing the flow of the game," sports TV analyst Shannon Sharpe said.

"The integrity of the game is hurting right now. Somebody is going to get hurt," ESPN's Keyshawn Johnson said.

Retired NFL Referee, Ben Dreith believes that couldn't be further from the truth.

"They said the players can get hurt," Dreith said. "How can an official cause a player to get hurt? They can't do it! There's nothing an official can to do to stop anybody from getting hurt."

Dreith started as a high school referee in 1950. He was hired by the American Football League back in 1960.

He says, just like the new refs, it takes time to learn the ropes.

"All the years I worked we had mistakes in every single game. They say [the replacement refs] make too many mistakes. What mistakes did they make?," Dreith said.

Dreith agrees the game currently has a different pace than fans and players are used to but says there's a good reason.

"[People] say the officiating is too slow. That's a dumb answer," Dreith said. "It's too slow because they are taking their time and trying to get everything right. They are in a fish bowl. They will get better and they are going to get better every ball game."
