The Pueblo Chieftain reports District Judge David Crockenberg sentenced Arien Rivas on Friday for killing 18-year-old Joshua Abeyta at a party in July 2010.
Rivas was convicted in August of second-degree murder after his attorneys successfully argued that his intoxication the night of the shooting was so great that he couldn't form the intent necessary to commit murder after deliberation. Abeyta was shot as he was fighting one of Rivas' friends at the party.
Crockenberg, who gave Rivas credit for more than 800 days he spent in jail, called the shooting an "execution" and noted that Abeyta was defenseless.
