It is very rare for me to reach out to friends and colleagues about politics, but this upcoming election is too important for me to sit on the sidelines," the email read, in part. "There are only 39 days until the November Election! I hope you'll join me in sending a clear message that Mitt Romney is the best candidate to serve as our next President.

Viewers raised concerns since the email came from a Gmail address and the donation link did not directly lead back to Mitt Romney's website.

The Starboard Group, finance consultants for the Romney campaign in Colorado, issued a statement verifying it was indeed a legitimate email.

"Mitt Romney's economic plan had made him the choice of so many business leaders -- from small business owners in rural Colorado to one of Colorado's most well-known entrepreneurs who also doubles as an American football icon, John Elway," Starboard Group wrote to 9NEWS on Sunday.
