Several justices questioned whether Congress ever meant to let lawyers circumvent U.S. sovereign immunity for violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Lawyer James X. Bormes sued the government for printing part of his credit card number and the expiration date on a receipt. Federal law prohibits credit card receipts from having both.

Justices are expected to rule sometime next year.
