Field Training Officer Barrett Potthoff with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office says it happened near Animas Air Park.
The pilot was the only one on board, and other than a bump on the head, Potthoff says the pilot is fine.
It's not clear if the plane was taking off or landing at the time.
The incident isn't believed to have affected other airport operations.
