#SafeKids Twitter chat focused on how to talk to our kids about staying safe. 

9NEWS tweeted a series of questions using the hashtag #SafeKids to be discussed by viewers and our guests.

Many parents throughout Colorado and around the nation are now talking to their kids about stranger danger. The abduction of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway put this talk front and center and reminded all parents of the importance, even urgency, of it.

We know this is not an easy talk to have. Many of us at 9NEWS have had this talk with our kids. Each of us is asking, "did my words stick?" Or asking, "did I say enough or did I say too much?"

How many parents are struggling how to talk to their kids when they are trying to process what happened to Jessica when they never thought something like this would actually happen near them?

How many parents are asking, "how do I answer my kids' hard questions about Jessica?"

We at 9NEWS are asking those questions. We don't know all the right answers but we do know parent-to-parent advice is where many find answers. We know there are experts who answer these questions every day.

We are going to get parents and experts talking with one another. We will lead and facilitate a #SafeKids Twitter chat.

Jefferson County Sheriff's Department put a note on their Facebook page to remind parents that the stranger danger talk, isn't just about strangers anymore. "Child safety teachings have evolved in recent years. The old 'stranger danger' concept is outdated - today, programs acknowledge that strangers aren't the only people who can harm a child."
