You can catch the show at the Buell Theater through Oct. 21.

The Broadway hit is about a white DJ who falls in love with a black singer. It's set at the beginning of Civil Rights movement.

Actor Rhett George plays Gator in the musical. He stopped by the 9NEWS Studios recently. He says the plot of "Memphis" stands outs from other shows because it's based on history.

"Just knowing that in that time period there were select white DJ's that began playing music on black stations, I think really broke a lot of ground," George said. "We're telling a story of history every night through "Memphis" because back in that time period that was actually happening."

"Memphis" has won four Tony Award's, including Best Musical, Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations.
