Right now, travelers across the country are starting to plan trips to see family and friends, or even just to just get away. But, believe it or not, there are fewer flights right now than ever before.

The good news, average airfares are down about 5 percent according to bookings on Orbitz.com. However, hotel rates are up slightly, around a 6 percent  to 8 percent increase.

So when is the best time to travel around the holidays to avoid the crowds and higher prices? Orbitz.com says when it comes to Thanksgiving, the busiest days are the day before the holiday and the Sunday and Monday of the next week to return.

"Your best bets are going to be flying out early, leaving on Tuesday or on Thanksgiving morning and then coming back either on Saturday or Tuesday on your return flights," Tornatore said.

She adds that you can also save if you avoid certain travel days around Christmas.

"Over Christmas the busiest and most expensive days are going to be Sunday the 23rd and Wednesday the 26th of December."

Traveling on an off-peak day could also help you avoid delays. Orbitz.com says those happen more often on high volume days.
