One Mitt Romney sign was even tagged with offensive words and swastikas.

"It's unbelievable that this would happen in our community," Bernie Shafer with the Larimer County GOP said.

"We would much prefer Fort Collins to be plastered with four-by-eight Obama signs, than we would see this kind of defacement on any sign," Shafer said.

Ashley Leclair, who lives in Fort Collins, put up a Mitt Romney sign three times in the last month.

The signs disappeared every time.

"It does make me a little angry," Leclair said.

Nobody knows who is responsible.

Larimer County democrats say the frequency of theft this year doesn't appear to be any different than most election years .

"People are calling in about democratic yard signs, too, but I do not see that it is a large issue, I don't see a lot of people doing it," said William Russell, with Larimer County Democrats.

Republicans say they've heard of dozens of cases in the last month.

"Quite frankly we've not seen this, at this level, in past elections," Shafer said.

Fort Collins Police say they only have four reports of stolen or damaged political signs in the last month.
