Xcel Energy says the blackouts affected about 50,000 customers starting at 10 p.m. Tuesday, and 30 percent of them still had no electricity Wednesday afternoon.
The company says it expects to have most everyone online by late Wednesday night.
The outage also affected metro-area businesses. The Safeway at South Downing Street and East Evans Avenue had no power until late Wednesday morning. Some perishable food had to be thrown out.
The National Weather Service is predicting sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph possible across the eastern half of Colorado Wednesday.
The wind and low humidity prompted the weather service to issue a red flag warning for eastern and southeastern Colorado, meaning the danger of fire is very high to extreme.
Fort Collins has reported a 40 mph gust.
