Dennis Pratt II is accused of shooting 20-year-old Jacob Maldonado on Tuesday after he suspected him of theft. 

Authorities say Pratt told them several thousand dollars worth of batteries, radiators and metal had been stolen from his 160-acre property recently and he wanted to catch the suspects. 

According to the Pueblo Chieftain, a police report says Pratt did not report the thefts to the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office and the shooting is not covered by the state's "Make My Day" law. 

That law allows homeowners who believe they are in danger to use deadly force.
