Fourteen-year-old Noa and 11-year-old Micaela locked themselves in the bathroom after someone broke into their home Friday morning. Both of their parents were at work.

"There was someone looking through the window," Noa said.

"I thought it was our lawn guy [at first]," Micaela said. "We heard the door break open."

Their parents say it's not the first burglary in their neighborhood. They say at least one other incident happened in August. That home was broken into in a similar fashion: kicking in the front door.

The girls' mother says the burglar only took a few small items, but what she prizes most, her daughters did exactly what they should have.

"I'm so proud of them," Evie Colpi said. "I was mortified that this happened but so happy they knew what to do."

While they hid in their basement shower, the girls say they were on the phone with their father who was working only about a half-mile away. They say he got home very quickly, just in time to see a man running from their back yard.

The Colpis say Englewood Police came and gathered evidence. They say as far as they can tell not much is happening in the investigation of the first incident.

Englewood Police never responded to requests by 9NEWS for information on either of these incidents.

Hours after the break in, the Colpis had a home security system installed.
