The Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center reports more than 1,000 acres were burning Tuesday evening. The blaze was zero percent contained as of Tuesday.

Custer County sheriff's officials say they are working to evacuate the town of Wetmore as the fire spreads in high winds, and Pueblo County sheriff's officials say they are evacuating 308 homes in their jurisdiction.

Evacuees are being told to go to the Southern Baptist Church in Florence.

At least 12 structures have burned. No injuries have been reported.

Colorado Highway 96 is closed to westbound traffic at the far west Lake Pueblo entrance.

Wind is a problem. Tuesday the area experienced 50 mile an hour gusts. The forecast is similar for Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Pueblo reported gusts up to 79 mph outside Wetmore just before 1 p.m. Tuesday.
