The event took place at the school's auditorium in Aurora.
Westenberg is described as a teacher that actively seeks out interaction with her students. One of her former students, Jada Boyd, weighed in on her experiences with Westenberg.
"She was one of the most vibrant teachers that I have ever met. She didn't have us sit at our desks the whole time and have us just read from text books," Boyd said.
Westenberg also weighed in on what it felt like to win the award.
"It is a pleasure to be the 2013 Colorado Teacher of the Year. I will strive to represent you well," Westenberg said.
