Despite recent snow storms dropping several inches of fresh powder, Highway 82 over Independence Pass is still open between Leadville and Aspen.
The road is mostly wet with some snowpack, but the twisting highway cuts through and over snow-capped peaks reaching an elevation of 12,000 feet. It is one of the most beautiful drives in country, but you don't have to take our word on it.
"I am from Boston and I have never seen anything like this. I have been on some amazing drives LA to San Francisco on Route 1 and that pales in comparison to this," Adam Salomone said. "It is really very incredible. I am very impressed and will be back."
CDOT plans on closing Independence Pass for the winter season on Nov. 7. Last year it closed Nov. 2 and in 2010 it closed Oct. 28.
