Sheriff's Capt. Frank Gale tells The Denver Post the altercation happened at about 9:45 a.m. Sunday at the jail on Colfax Avenue, and the deputy, who suffered a sprained back, drove to an urgent care facility downtown.

Gale says deputies found a single joint of marijuana in the cell, and the inmate will be charged with felony possession of contraband.

The altercation follows an attack on another deputy last Friday when a different inmate punched the officer in the face.
