Catastrophes and injuries have caused Red Cross employees nationwide to flock to the East Coast. Vice President of the Red Cross Disaster Services Charley Shimanski talked about the magnitude of Sandy and what is being done to help with the recovery process.
"This one of the largest operations we've seen in a long time, active across 16 states and [an] area that is essentially as big as Europe," Shimanski said. "We're already seeing damage not just from wind, and rain, and the storm surge, and the flooding, but we actually got snow and fires throughout Queens as everyone has seen."
He also talked about the number of workers Red Cross has in place and how long the recovery process will be.
"We've got nearly 1,000 [workers] in place right now, We're looking at deploying as many as 4,000 from throughout the country for this response. It will be the biggest response. It will be going on for weeks," Shimanski said.
Shimanski mentioned how Colorado residents can help with the recovery process.
"Now is the time we need the financial support of Coloradans to support us in other states. Generous contributions are what keeps the Red Cross alive. Folks can go to our website at redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS or you can even just text a $10 gift buy, by texting the word 'redcross' to 90999, but this is how we do what we do," Shimanski said.
