Flu-related illnesses begin to surge around late October, which means this is the perfect time to get the vaccination.
Health officials are emphasizing the importance of getting a vaccination because the flu strains alter each year, meaning the immunity from 2012's vaccinations will not be sufficient against current flu diseases.
Immunization Section Chief for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Dr. Rachel Herlihy explained the significance of getting a flu shot sooner rather than later.
"There are some myths there, that the flu shot will wane over time through the influenza season, but you really can get it as soon as it is available. So there is no risk of it waning over the influenza season, so the earlier you can get it, the better," Herlihy said.
Herlihy also explained who should get the nasal spray versus the actual shot.
"The mist is really recommended for those between the ages of two and 49 that are healthy. So there are certain people that should not get the vaccine, the nasal mist. If you have chronic medical conditions including things like asthma, it's really better to go with the flu shot," Herlihy said.DENVER - A person is in serious condition after a vehicle hit a pedestrian while the person was running to catch the bus.
The vaccination is widely accessible at doctors' offices and pharmacies.
