WESTMINSTER - Police believe a car traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of the Boulder Turnpike caused a wreck that killed one man and injured three people.
The deceased victim has been identified as Vincent Michael James Gibson, 25, of Broomfield. He was the passenger in the wrong-way vehicle driven by Britni June Bunn, 23, also of Broomfield.
The eastbound lanes of the Boulder Turnpike between Wadsworth and Sheridan Boulevard were closed through Wednesday morning's rush hour while a Major Accident Reconstruction Team investigated the crash. All lanes reopened to traffic at 8:10 a.m.
Westminster Police Department Investigator Cheri Spottke says it appears a Ford SUV - driven by Bunn - was traveling the wrong way on the Turnpike and collided with an Acura coupe just after 2:45 a.m.
Spottke says Gibson died on scene. Bunn as well as the driver and a passenger in the Acura were taken to area hospitals.
Their condition is not known at this time.
Police have reason to believe alcohol or drugs may have been a factor in the crash, but due to the severity of the crash, it will be several days before the accident is fully reconstructed.
