FORT COLLINS - The City of Fort Collins looks poised to be the first city in Colorado to require its residents recycle cardboard.

The ordinance will be voted on Tuesday night at a city council meeting.

Fort Collins estimates nearly 10 percent of the city's trash is cardboard, so they hope recycling the material will help reduce the city's waste.

"It's an exciting opportunity, I think, for Fort Collins, because it really is one of the most important next steps to help our community reduce our waste stream," said Luncinda Smith, who heads Environmental Services for the city.

If it passes, which it is expected to do, city officials say they plan to take it easy on enforcement at first.

They'd like to spend some time educating the public about the new policy.
