DENVER - In addition to classes, friends and thinking of what to do after graduation, one high school senior is also taking on inventing.

Nate Newman, a senior at Kent Denver School, has developed a self-cleaning, underwater webcam. With the help of fellow students and teacher Trevor Mendelow, the idea came from the need for a better camera during ocean exploration.

"About five years ago at Kent Denver School, we started some research projects in the Florida Keys, and from that, stemmed a need for some underwater camera technologies," Mendelow said.

That's not all for Newman. The high school student has several things in the works for his bright future.

"We have several very interesting projects with Teens For Oceans. One of our projects that we're going to complete this month is in the Cayman Islands," Newman said.

He and Mendelow are also launching a new company that will make their patented camera system commercially available.

"It is really a terrific thing. Nate really is a special kid and Kent Denver School is a very special place with engaged students and with the ability - with the support of places like Kent Denver School - education can really do great thing," Mendelow said. "I'm really proud of Nate and all of the people I work with in Boulder who've helped us develop this."
