THORNTON - Police say the bicyclist who died after being hit by a car on Sunday night was at fault for the collision.
The bicyclist was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of 100th Avenue just before 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, and failed to stop at a red light at the intersection with Colorado Boulevard, according to Thornton Police Department Spokesman Matt Barnes.
The bicyclist was struck by 34-year-old David Dean Collins, who was driving a 1988 GMC pickup truck. The bicyclist later died at the hospital.
Collins, who thought that ice had fallen off his vehicle, was unaware that he had been involved in the accident. When he got home, he saw the damage and called the police, Barnes said.
Police went to Collins' home, where he was taken into custody for investigation of a hit-and-run involving death.
He was later released pending formal charges and the results of an investigation.
The name of the victim has not yet been released.
No court date has been set for Collins, since no charges have been filed.
