KUSA - Local leaders are shining the spotlight on communities in the Denver metro area for the biennial Live, Work, Play awards, sponsored by the Denver Regional Council of Governments.
"Live, Work and Play ... is a great opportunity for us to shine a spotlight on the businesses, the organizations and the people in this community that make Denver such a great place to live for people of all ages, incomes and abilities," DRCOG communications and marketing director Steve Erickson said.
There were 10 nominees for 2013's People's Choice Award, which honors places, events and projects that best exemplify Metro Vision, DRCOG's long term plan for development in the metro area.
Those nominees were:
-Seniors' Choice, an adult day program in Aurora
-The Town of Bennett Comprehensive Plan
-The Colorado Wedding District in Castle Rock
-Centennial Center Park, Centennial's first city-owned park
-Lone Tree's Gateridge Community
-TAXI community in northeast Denver
-The 40 West Arts District in Lakewood
-Washington Village cohousing
-Denver Botanic Gardens' 25-year Master Plan: phase I & II
-Olde Town Arvada
The voting for the People's Choice award started on March 5, and continues until noon on April 24 on DR.COG's website, http://www3.drcog.org/LiveWorkPlay/.
DRCOG is also presenting the inaugural Way to Go Commuter Awards, which honors employers and individuals who embrace sustainable methods of transportation. A list of nominees was not released.
The winners will be announced on April 24 at the Live, Work, Play 2013 celebration event at the McNichols Civic Center building from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
More than 171,000 votes were cast for the 2011 People's Choice award. The Villagio at Inverness - a mixed use community in Arapahoe County - was the winner.
DRCOG was founded in 1955 as a non-profit group of local governments. It receives funding from membership dues and state and federal grants.
