FORT COLLINS - A Fort Collins author who lost her home in 2011's Crystal Fire has written a book to try and help those with homes near wildfires.

"The only thing worse than losing your home in a fire is to find out afterwards you don't have enough money to replace it," Masterson said.

She says it's important for homeowners to know that they are likely underinsured to be proactive about that reality before it's too late.

"At least half of the people who lose a home in a wildfire are at least 25 percent underinsured," Masterson said.

She says it's also critical for homeowners to make an inventory of everything they own, including photos. Another tip is to create an escape plan.

"If your home burns down in a wildfire, it's going to be all the things you didn't do that are going to come back to haunt you," she said.
