DENVER - Just in time for football season, McDonald's famous McRib is back for a limited time at participating locations.
This iconic sandwich was created in 1981, and it has a huge online following.
There are hundreds of web pages devoted to it, countless fan pages on Facebook, and is a huge seller for the company - which could use a little help right now.
The barbecue-sauce-smothered sandwich was supposed to return at the end of October but was pushed back to help boost end-of-the-year sales.
Do you know why the McRib came about? When McNuggets were first introduced, demand outstripped the chicken supply.
So, franchises that didn't have the Chicken McNuggets needed something new to sell, and that's when the McRib was invented.
According to an article from Chicago magazine, the McRib is pure pork, but its been called by some a "restructured meat product." It contains a mixture of different parts of a pig, then mixed with salt and water to extract proteins those proteins bind together so that it can be re-molded into any specific shape.
