LONGMONT - A 21-year-old man appeared in court on Monday on charges related to the death of an 18-year-old girl from Longmont.
Police believe Premila Lal was hiding a closet and jumped out at Nerreck Galley just before being shot at a home in the 2500 block of Cambridge Drive in Longmont.
Her father, Praveen Lal, says Premila and her 12-year-old cousin were on their way to Longmont High School for a football game Friday night when they decided to stop by their Uncle's house to see Galley and Premila's brother. He says they snuck in the house and intended to scare Galley. Instead, they were mistaken for intruders.
"They came upstairs. My son went in the master bedroom on the left side. [He] went into the room. Nobody was there, and the closet door opens and [I] hear a scream. He turns around, and he shoots her before realizing it was Premila," Praveen Lal said.
Lal was transported to Longmont United Hospital where she died.
Police have identified the shooter as Galley. He was arrested on unrelated charges, for providing a handgun to a minor. Galley faces charges of child abuse and reckless endangerment.
Monday afternoon, the shooter was released on his on recognizance with the pending bond of $50,000. He is allowed to go to the visitation for the victim, but he is not allowed to go to her funeral.
Family members say they are mourning the death of their daughter along with the arrest of a close family friend.
