KUSA - Despite the difficulty of getting to and from their homes by vehicle in the Rist Canyon area, about 100 residents have still chosen not to accept help from local authorities to evacuate.
Some frustrated residents, who do not want to wait a week or so for the county to help, are trying to build there own way in and out.
Rist Canyon volunteer Fire chief Bob Gann says convincing those left in the area to evacuate is tricky, even after telling them the risks of staying.
Gann also says if the residents have an emergency, they are going to be isolated. If that is what they want to do, that is their legal right to do so.
However, it is not just about the difficulty of getting to residents. It is also hard for them to communicate. There are currently no phone lines.
