KUSA - Businesses along the Front Range that face clean up and repair count themselves among the lucky. There are several other businesses that will have to start over because of the floods.
"We really wanted to help people out even as we need help ourselves," Debbie Hottinger said.
Hottinger has worked at the Alpine Slide at Heritage Square in Golden for 34 years. She's never seen damage like the kind that happened after last week's floods.
Water washed away tons of dirt and lifted 30 pieces from the track. Each piece weighs about 600 pounds. Buildings flooded, a roof collapsed, and a road washed away. Hottinger knew they needed help to make needed repairs and reopen.
She called The Action Center. It is a non-profit organization where a person in need can receive food, clothing, and help finding a job.
Mag Strittmatter is the executive director of The Action Center.
"There was a business that had a need, and we have clients looking for opportunity," Strittmatter said. "We can find creative ways to work together and heal the wound and come through this strong."
Paul Luther and his wife went to The Action Center this week to borrow a computer as they continue their job search. Luther, a butcher by trade, has been out of a job for about a month. He didn't know how they would make the bills for September.
The need for help at the Alpine Slide became an opportunity for the Luthers to make some money to support their two young sons.
They were part of a team of eleven working this week to help get the business back open.
Luther shoveled dirt into buckets. Others rode the slide down to pick up buckets, deliver them and then back up on the chair lift.
"We have probably filled a thousand buckets with dirt today," Luther said. "We are making a lot of progress. But there is a lot more to do."
Each trip they thought about other communities with far more damage.
"It's nothing like in Boulder and those areas," Luther said. "I'm just glad to be on the team helping in some way."
The Alpine Slide will be back open on Saturday
