DENVER - In December of 2010, a then 16-year-old Karina Vargas was playing with her new puppy on the sidewalk outside of Aurora Central High School.
A car drove past and fired a shot at someone else in the street, however, instead of hitting that person, Vargas was hit in the back.
The wound permanently paralyzed her from the waist down and caused multiple, life-threatening injuries. Despite her situation, Vargas remains determined to fight and not give up on life.
A fundraiser for Karina Vargas is being held Thursday from 5 p.m. to 9p.m. at Edge Bar at Four Seasons Hotel in Denver to help raise money for the $60,000 outstanding in medical bills.
Vargas will need to continue medical treatment throughout her life. Her family cannot afford the critical wheelchair modifications to their home and she still does not have a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
However, Vargas continues to volunteer with non-profit organizations and gives back to the community.
