KUSA - Reading a food label and understanding exactly what it says can be tricky. Sometimes, the ingredient list can be hard to read against the design of the label, or it's a list that reads like a chemical list instead of foods we recognize.
9NEWS Medical Expert Dr. John Torres says the most important thing to pay attention to is the nutrition label.
"When it comes to reading labels, it can be very very confusing because there's a lot of information on there, but that information is really regulated by the government and it breaks down into certain categories," Dr. Torres said. "So there's certain things you want to look at. No. 1 and probably most important, look at the amount of calories and the amount of information per serving is the important part. Bag of potato chips [can contain] multiple servings. Some things very small only have one serving. So you have to multiply whatever's on there by the amount of servings in the bag itself and that tells you how much you're getting overall."
