GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) - A Golden man who pleaded guilty to strangling his wife has been sentenced to 48 years in prison.
David Reathman was sentenced Tuesday in Jefferson County in the death of his 70-year-old wife, Barbara, in March.
The 65-year-old Reathman had pleaded guilty to a second degree murder charge.
Authorities found Barbara Reathman's body in March after a family member called police to check on her. David Reathman eventually surrendered to police after saying that he tried to commit suicide by staying outside in the freezing mountains.
Police say Reathman told them he killed his wife because he was terminally ill with cancer and was struggling financially. They say he exaggerated the severity of his health problems.
