SOMERSET, Colo. (AP) - Oxbow Mining is laying off about half of its Elk Creek Mine workforce after deciding it will have to abandon a mining machine worth millions of dollars.
According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, the actions at the Somerset facility follow months of efforts by the company to try to recover the equipment after issues involving spontaneous combustion arose in the coal mine in January.
About 150 workers are affected. Mine executive vice president Mike Ludlow says there are no expectations the equipment can be recovered.
