KUSA - There's gold in Wheat Ridge! And now the city will allow people to get it.
Wheat Ridge City Council will lease the land from Jefferson County, and the city will let people pan for gold as long they don't use machinery to do it.
This greenbelt area is just west of I-70 and Youngfield adjacent to the Clear Creek Trail.
The land is known as the Arapahoe Bar.
Gold panning has been going on here for about 100 years, but the activities have never been managed.
These new rules will allow for recreational gold panning to continue and it should help protect a land that the Arapahoe tribe used to call home.
