KUSA - Although winter doesn't officially begin until Dec. 21, many places in Colorado have already seen their first snowfall.
Before it arrives with all its strength, now is the time to get your car prepared for winter travel.
Mindy Crane from CDOT suggests getting good snow tires or all-wheel tires for your vehicle.
"You also want to make sure you have plenty of windshield wiper fluid and that your vehicle is in good operating order." Having an emergency kit in your car is very important. It can include items like a blanket, flares, shovel, kitty litter, drinking water and non-perishable food.
Traveling in winter weather is dangerous with icy and slick roads. Slower speeds are recommended to allow enough time to stop, and never use cruise control while driving in a snow storm because it actually gives you less control over your vehicle.
